I heard it first in the ReadWriteWeb editorial room, where I hang out as an intern, and then it spread like wildfire through the variety of communities I follow on Twitter (higher ed, academics, librarians/info pros, cultural journalists and webtech folks mainly.) As of right now, 1am Friday morning, there still has not been an official confirmation of what exactly is going to happen to the service from its parent company Yahoo.

However… the aforementioned amazing thing… the power of the social web kicked in and people started to talk to one another. At around 5pm, I saw this tweet from Laura Pasquini linking to a Google Doc of alternatives to Delicious. I was at the time writing a quick post for my Tumblr on a few services I had heard chatted about on Twitter throughout the afternoon, and this Doc had them all in there, with Pros and Cons. In the midst of all this, Marshall Kirkpatrick posted his love letter to Delicious, which I helped do some research on, so I started to monitor comments on his post for further engagement (as any good intern would do).

As the news grew and spread throughout the evening, I saw all kinds of new ideas, cool looking web apps to try out, and different ways of imagining data all being discussed because a valuable service we have grown so accustomed to might be shutting down.

The best part? I think this was a real kick in the pants that will get all sorts of different groups (computer science, digital humanists, techies, web geeks, information professionals, etc.) talking about the one thing we are all coming face to face with in the ever-expanding social web – data/content curation.

This is a topic I have grown really interested in over the past few months, and will be following very closely in the future. Now, I just have to find out how and where to save all my links, articles, and research. Where will you be moving your bookmarks?

Delicious Social Bookmarks Going Away – What Shall We Do?

Apparently it’s not only the season for holiday giving, it’s also the season for favorite web 2.0 services to go offline. It’s as if Scrooge has moved into Silicon Valley! Yesterday was the last day of service (paid or free) for drop.io, and today we learn from TechCruch (via Bud Hunt) that delcious.com is going dark.

Of course everything can’t be free online, but I (like many folks, I’m sure) have grown accustomed to using delicious.com’s social bookmarks for free. For several years now, I’ve been using Delicious as a backup for my bookmarks, which I have set to cross-post from Diigo. Back in September, I wrote “Time to ditch Diigo or pay up?” and complained about Diigo going premium. Today’s announcement that Delicious is going away isn’t the equivalent of “the sky falling,” but it is news which is catalyzing a lot of brainstorming and problem solving. What shall we do?

Alec Couros has created an open, shared Google Doc for brainstorming “Alternatives to Delicious.” The current collaboration on the document is fast and furious – similar to the “Alternatives to Ning” doc Alec created in April when Ning when premium.

Alec’s document, edited by 33 folks so far, includes more than 10 delicious alternatives, such as:

1. Google Bookmarks
2. Diigo
3. Mister Wong
4. PinBoard
5. Xmarks
6. Google Chrome Bookmarks Sync
7. Porta Portal
8. Scuttle
9. EverNote
10. Historious

Of these options, Diigo looks (as far as I can tell) like the best option at this point. I’d prefer to continue using Diigo as my primary bookmarking tool, and have it cross-post automatically for backup purposes (as it’s done to Delicious) to another bookmarking platform. I think this duplication of bookmarks is very important. Scuttle looks promising as a backup option, since it’s self-hosted, but I don’t know how I could cross-post simultaneously to Diigo and Scuttle. It would be nice if there was a service like PixelPipe for photos, which supported posting once and the cross-posting several places.

Many thanks to Alec and everyone who has contributed to the Google Doc on Delicious Alternatives to date. It’s awesome to see this kind of real-time collaboration, and I’m sure many more people will benefit from this shared effort in the weeks ahead! The discussion in the doc brings up important questions like, “What is social bookmarking?” Lots of tools can be used to save text, but not all qualify as “social bookmarks” in the same way Delicous, Diigo, and some other tools do. The ability to tag saved bookmarks, access saved bookmarks via the web, and browse publicly shared bookmarks from others are all essential parts of social bookmarking from my vantage point.

If you are a Delicious.com user and haven’t lately, consider downloading a full backup of your current bookmarks.

As described in Alec’s Google Doc, delicousbackup (free) will let you make this static snapshot of your bookmarks web-browsable if you have access to a shared hosting site. I’ll give that a try over the holiday break.

For a couple of days now, we’ve been hearing rumors that the Yahoo layoffs included the entire Delicious team.  Now Former Yahoo employee and Upcoming founder Andy Baio has tweeted out the above Yahoo! product team meeting slide that seems to show that Yahoo! is either closing or merging the social bookmarking service as well as Upcoming, Fire Eagle, MyBlogLog and others.

In some kind of weird founder solidarity, the slide was originally posted on Twitter by MyBlogLog founder Eric Marcoullier.

Listed under the ominous “Sunset” are: Delicious, Altavista, MyBlogLog, Yahoo! Bookmarks, Yahoo! Picks

Under “Merge” are: Upcoming, FoxyTunes, Sideline, FireEagle, Yahoo Events and Yahoo People Search.

It also looks like sundry Yahoo properties like Yahoo Deals and Yahoo Calendar will be made into features.

Delicious, MyBlogLog and Upcoming have been somewhat neglected since being acquired by Yahoo and founders Joshua Schachter, Marcoullier and Baio have all moved on to do other (more successful) things. Perhaps one tell tale sign of Delicious’ demise? The support forums are now riddled with spam and team sign-off missives like the one below.

I have emailed Yahoo for more information and verification and will update this post when I hear back.

Update: AllThingsD’s Liz Gannes is reporting that the Yahoo products will be in fact shut down and that the slide does in fact originate from an all hands meeting at Yahoo, following yesterday’s layoffs.Yahoo Product Manager Blake Irving has threatened to fire whomever leaked the slide.

The official response from Yahoo:

“Part of our organizational streamlining involves cutting our investment in underperforming or off-strategy products to put better focus on our core strengths and fund new innovation in the next year and beyond.

We continuously evaluate and prioritize our portfolio of products and services, and do plan to shut down some products in the coming months such as Yahoo! Buzz, our Traffic APIs, and others. We will communicate specific plans when appropriate.”

For the few of you unaware this is PR speak for, “We confirm.”

Update 2: Delicious just posted the following “What’s Next For Delicious” on its blog:

“No, we are not shutting down Delicious. While we have determined that there is not a strategic fit at Yahoo!, we believe there is a ideal home for Delicious outside of the company where it can be resourced to the level where it can be competitive.”

It seems as though Yahoo has made up its mind this morning that it will sell the property, not close it.

One of the first social Web 2.0 services is being killed off by Yahoo: del.icio.us, the popular social bookmarking website.

The news comes via Techcrunch, who noted that they’d heard tell that Yahoo’s Christmastime layoffs (which may also have affected the Yahoo Video team) also include the entire Delicious team, which was then seemingly confirmed by a slide from a Yahoo product team meeting listing del.icio.us as a “Sunset” product.

Now, Delicious’s death has been confirmed directly by Yahoo, in a canned statement:
